Description

The National Westminster Bank is a single-storey building featuring an exposed timber-frame construction set on a coursed rubble stone base, topped with graded rough silver-grey slates. A large stone stack is positioned just below the ridge, slightly left of center. The box-frame is made of black-painted adzed oak, with whitewashed plaster panels arranged in three rows and seven columns on each side of a central gabled canted bay window. The windows are oak mullion-and-transom style with leaded lights.

The central bay has stone up to the sill level, topped by a large four-light window that includes two layers of top-lights, with the upper layer positioned above eaves level. The splayed sides of the bay also feature similar glazing with top-lights, and there is some decorative carving on the transoms. The timber-framed gable rests on a moulded bressumer that extends outward over the bay window's splay, supported by short vertical corner posts with turned pendant finials. A plaque displaying the bank's name is located in the main panel, with diagonal bracing on each side and wishbone bracing above. The gable features overhanging bargeboards with a pendant gable finial and decorative framing on the sides.

On either side of the bay, there are matching three-light windows with a single transom and top-lights, each accompanied by two plastered panels below. The symmetry is disrupted by a five-panel length at each end. To the left, there is a four-light window for the manager's office, which occupies three panels in width and has plaster panelling on each side and below. To the right, there are two sections of panelling, followed by a doorway and a single section beyond. The entrance features an oak studded-plank broad door with strap hinges, set in a moulded frame with a 4-light leaded overlight. The end walls are timber-framed, including a tie-beam, two thin collars, thin vertical studding, and long straight angle braces. A metal plaque is located on the east gable. The west wall is partially screened by a short length of stone walling that includes a cambered-headed doorway, stone voussoirs, and an oak plank door with strap hinges.

The ceiling has been altered, but a timber counter, possibly original, remains in light panelled wood with console brackets.
