Description
Capel Newydd is a simple classical style chapel that features late 19th-century stucco cladding on an early 19th-century building. It has a slate roof. The front wall has two central arched 12-pane windows with radiating bar heads, flanked by two cambered-headed doorways with boarded doors, and two outer 12-pane gallery lights. Late 19th-century broad bands with top moulding run across the facade; the upper band arches over the central windows with keystones but is interrupted by the gallery lights. The lower band spans over the cambered door heads, also with keystones, and is partially broken by the main window sills. A plaque is located between the windows. The left end wall is slate hung and features two 12-pane gallery windows, with stucco on the ground floor. The right end is roughcast and has two similar windows. The rear is made of whitewashed rubble stone and includes two ground floor 12-pane sash windows under stone voussoirs.
Inside, there is a plain plaster ceiling with a cove on the front and rear walls, and a simple 5-leaf centrepiece in a roundel that may date from the early 19th century, while the rest of the interior is later 19th century. The three-sided gallery, which has canted angles, is supported by marbled iron columns measuring 2x1x2. The gallery features a deep cornice with a painted frieze and long horizontal panels beneath a moulded rail. Four brass oil lamps hang from the frieze. The raked gallery pews have panelled backs and shaped bench ends, while the similar pews below are arranged in three blocks with long panelled sections. The set fawr has curved angles and plain panels. The balustraded platform includes matching balustrades on either side of the steps, with newels topped by finials. The platform balustrades curve serpentine out to the panelled pulpit front, which has three pointed panels and a moulded cornice. A plaster-moulded rere-arch features panelled pilasters and moulded capitals. Additionally, two large brass oil lamps on twisted standards with finials are present. Lobbies on each side of the pulpit contain the gallery stairs.
