Description

Bethel Independent Chapel is a High Victorian Gothic style building dating from the 1880s. The chapel is constructed of colourwashed stucco with a slate roof edged with red ridge tiles. The prominent front facade features two large pointed windows with timber tracery, embellished with punched detail. Smaller windows are set within porches, with additional lights above the main windows illuminating the gallery. The eaves are supported by brackets of alternating sizes. Windows are topped with hoodmoulds featuring foliate stops, with the two central hoods joined together. The main windows have long, pointed two-light openings and chamfered sills, while the upper gallery lights have simpler heads. The porches have matching pointed doors with similar hoodmoulds and overlights, and feature ledged doors with strap hinges. Cusped bargeboards and terracotta finials adorn the gables. Plain pointed windows are found on the side walls, and the end walls have two-storey sections with three-light, flat-headed windows using Gothic timber tracery. The rear of the chapel features a large, gabled projection containing an octofoil and roundels in the main window, with smaller flanking windows featuring sexfoils. Ground floor windows are sash windows.

The interior, of 1885, is outstanding. The roughly square space contains galleries on all four sides, but a triple arcade above the pulpit divides the seating area from raked pews and a large organ housed within the added rear projection. An enclosed schoolroom is located below. The plaster ceiling is divided into six long panels, each incorporating three sexfoiled roundels. The galleries are supported by five plain columns with a richly panelled front featuring intricate carved detail, including rows of quatrefoil roundels and pilasters with fretwork tracery and sinuous capitals. The pine pews are arranged in three blocks, with the outer blocks curved. A large, three-sided seat is positioned at the front, featuring curved angles, panelling, and a sexfoil-pierced rail. The pulpit is exceptionally ornate, with shafted arcading to its base and frontal, displaying pointed and round arched designs, attractive incised decoration, and fretted pilasters. The pulpit steps have balustrades carved from a single plank with intersecting open arcading, and enclosed angle steps lead to the gallery. The organ gallery is supported by three large ringed iron columns with arches. An organ built by Rushworth & Dreaper of Liverpool obscures the center rear window and features raking pews. A vestry is located beneath the organ gallery and includes a rear fireplace.
