Description

Bodowen is a house built around 1835, part of a larger development alongside Waterloo Place. This development is linked to the nearby Welshpool Company Flannel Factory, which was established in the same year, closed in 1900, and demolished in 1930.

The building is constructed of brick and features a hipped roof covered with concrete tiles instead of slate, with end wall stacks. It stands three storeys high and has a three-window range with a central entrance. The entrance includes a renewed door with an overlight set in a moulded architrave that has a cornice head and panelled rebates. To the right of the entrance is a canted bay window, and to the left is a 12-pane sash window with a gauged brick head. The upper storeys also have similar sash windows. The return elevation facing Factory Square features two 12-pane sash windows and a 20th-century brick porch added to the side entrance.

Surrounding the narrow forecourt to the north and west of the house are cast-iron railings with leaf finials arranged in two tiers, and urn finials on the braced principal posts. The entrance gate has decorative quatrefoil bracing below the mid-rail.

This early 19th-century town house is particularly notable for its connection to the former flannel factory and its role in the planned development alongside Waterloo Terrace.
