Description

Nos 1-4 Waterloo Place are a group of local ashlar buildings with a slate roof and brick axial stacks, dating from the 19th century. The structure is two storeys high and features an eight-window range, consisting of two houses on either side of a central passageway. The layout is symmetrical, with two-unit houses at each end, the right-hand house incorporating a shop, and single-unit houses in the centre, with their doorways located on either side of the round-arched passage entry.

The doorways throughout have six-panelled doors with overlights set in moulded architraves topped with cornice hoods. The windows are 16-pane sash types with painted sills, while there are blind windows above the doors of the outer premises. The shop in the right-hand unit features a two-light mid-19th century shop window with small panes and a moulded architrave.

The return elevation facing Salop Road is also two storeys high and consists of a nine-window range that includes three houses and a shop front, which is the continuation of the shop from Waterloo Place. This elevation is made of brick and has full-height pilasters flanking the doorways. It has a hipped slate roof with end wall stacks and oversailing eaves. The left side of the terrace continues the shop with a doorway flanked by late 19th-century shop windows on the ground floor, and above, there are 16-pane sash windows with painted gauged brick heads. Each of the houses numbered 1 to 3 has a central entrance flanked by two-pane sash windows on each floor. Number 3 retains its original six-panelled door, and all entrances feature panelled architraves.
