Description
1 and 2 Waterloo Terrace and 1-4 Waterloo Place are a group of local ashlar buildings with slate roofs and brick axial stacks, located on Salop Road in Welshpool. They are two storeys high and consist of an 8-window range featuring two houses on either side of a central passageway. The layout is symmetrical, with two-unit houses at each end, one of which includes a shop, and single-unit houses in the center, their doorways positioned on either side of the round-arched passage entry.
All doorways have 6-panelled doors with overlights set in moulded architraves topped with cornice hoods. The buildings feature 16-pane sash windows with painted sills, and there are blind windows above the doors of the outer premises. The shop in the right-hand unit has a mid-19th century two-light shop window with small panes and a moulded architrave.
The return elevation facing Salop Road is also two storeys high and consists of a 9-window range that includes three houses and a shop front, which is the continuation of the shop from Waterloo Place. This elevation is made of brick and features full-height pilasters beside the doorways. The hipped slate roof has end wall stacks and oversailing eaves. To the left of the terrace, the shop continues with a doorway flanked by late 19th-century shop windows on the ground floor, while above are 16-pane sash windows with painted gauged brick heads. Each of the houses, Nos 1-3, has a central entrance flanked by 2-pane sash windows on each floor. No 3 retains its original 6-panelled door, and all entrances have panelled architraves.
