Description

The Powysland Museum, originally built as a warehouse by the Montgomeryshire Canal Company around 1880, consists of two phases of construction at what was once the main town wharf. This building was added to an earlier warehouse, the remnants of which have been covered over during recent alterations made for its conversion into a museum.

The exterior features brick with stone dressings and hipped slate roofs, which extend from the northern range to create a deep canopy over the loading area. The structure is made up of two parallel ranges positioned at right angles to the canal. The earlier northern range includes a full-height loading bay with two openings in a pegged wood frame, now glazed, located on the northern elevation. There are three-light stone mullioned windows on each floor, along with an additional loading door in the upper storey of the western return elevation. The return elevation facing the canal also has similar three-light mullioned windows on each floor. The continuation of the hipped roof forms a canopy supported by timber posts and struts around the northern and eastern elevations. The parallel southern range has comparable fenestration facing the canal and in its southern return elevation.

Inside, the northern range consists of four bays with cast-iron columns and timber beams, featuring king-post trusses with tension braces. The southern range has three bays, also with cast-iron columns supporting timber beams and braced king-post trusses.

This building is recognized as an exceptionally good example of a late 19th-century canal warehouse.
