Description
19-22 Severn Street, Welshpool, is a row of four houses built in 1828 as a unified development, as evidenced by the rainwater heads. The terrace was commissioned by lawyer Richard Griffiths-Parry, who previously built the Mansion House as his residence.
The building is constructed with a brick front, and rough local rubble to the rear, with slate roofs and overhanging eaves. Each property has end wall stacks. It is three storeys high, with a symmetrical nine-window range. The end bays are slightly recessed and contain original six-panelled doors with overlights. The ground floor between these recessed bays is arcaded, featuring a series of depressed arches linked by a projecting impost band that also runs across the head of the central passage entrance, which is similarly detailed. Paired doorways are flanked by twelve-pane sash windows within arched recesses to either side of the arcaded section; the window recesses are rendered and have painted sills. The first floor windows are twelve-pane sashes with flat arched brick heads, but with rendered blind window spaces above the main doors and the central passage entrance. A canted oriel with a twelve-pane sash window is positioned on the right-hand side. All first-floor windows are linked by a continuous sill band. Upper windows are six-pane sashes below the eaves.
The terrace represents a considered and elegant piece of urban development from the early 19th century and retains a high degree of uniformity reflecting its original design.
