Description
The former canal warehouse was built in the early 19th century as part of the second phase of development of the Montgomeryshire Canal wharf at Welshpool, which was constructed between 1794 and 1797. By 1845, it was occupied by a canal merchant named Thomas Groom, and in 1859, it was taken over by the canal company.
The building features roughly coursed and squared local green rubble with a slate roof. The gable facing the canal has a full-height loading bay, which is divided into doors on each floor within a heavy wood frame. Above, there are remains of housing for a former external crane. The northeast elevation has similar wide openings and a small boarded window located beneath the eaves.
This warehouse is a notable example of small-scale canal architecture and is part of a group of related structures associated with the significant canal wharf at Welshpool.
