Description

Clive Place is a house built around 1820 as part of a small development by the Powis Estate. The property has undergone some remodelling, including an apparent extension of the house by one bay to the left and the addition of a rear wing.

The exterior features brick construction with a slate roof that overhangs on plain eaves. There are gable end and axial stacks, which were rebuilt in the later 19th century and topped with yellow brick caps. The house is two storeys high with an attic and has a four-window range, with the entrance located to the right of centre. This entrance may have originally been central, as the house might have been extended by a bay to the left. The entrance consists of a six-panelled door with a lozenge overlight, set within a later 19th-century timber porch. The flanking windows have been poorly replaced in their original openings, which feature painted flat arched heads with keystones. The attic is illuminated by windows in the gable apexes. Single-storey brick walls on either side connect the building to its neighbours, with the left side containing garage doors that were inserted around 1950.

Inside, there is a central entrance hall with principal rooms on either side, which retain marble fire-surrounds and plaster cornices. The staircase runs parallel to the rear wall of the house and features thin spindles, turned newels, and a swept rail.

Despite the changes to its windows that have affected its external appearance, Clive Place remains part of a distinctive group of similar houses (Nos 1 and 3-4 Clive Place) and still retains some character as a substantial early 19th-century dwelling.
