Description
Wegnall Cottage is a 17th-century building featuring two storeys with rubble footings and close studding. The first floor jetties out, supported by a partly moulded jetty-beam on curved brackets. There is an infilled first-floor doorway with an arched lintel, and the main entrance has a boarded and studded door. The cottage has two windows across the front, with cantilevered six-light oriel windows on bracket supports beneath cill beams, and leaded lights. To the left, there is a three-light window that is flush-set.
The roof is made of corrugated iron, with a large rubble stack on the right gable that has four diagonal stems, and a smaller stack on the left side. There are lean-to rubble extensions at both ends of the building.
The rear elevations display similar architectural details, with a rear wing that jetties over the ground floor, supported by corner brackets under the beam. The upper floors are temporarily covered.
Inside, the layout consists of a hall and kitchen at the front, separated by an entrance passage, and a parlour in the rear wing with a great chamber above. All main rooms are heated by fireplaces made of dressed stone, and the internal walls are square-framed with wattle and daub infill. The joists are stop-chamfered, there are wooden bressumers, and the stairs are located in the fireplace gable end.
