Description

Ashbrook House, also known as The Kilvert Gallery, is an L-plan building dating from the 19th century. It has two storeys, a basement, and attics, with a lower service range at the south-east end. The structure is made of stone, with part of the rear elevations featuring roughcast render. It has a slate roof with boxed eaves and rubble stacks. The building primarily features twelve-pane sash windows that have machine-tooled stone lintels and cills.

The front entrance is a six-panel door located up steps at the corner of the north-west front. There is also a side door next to a shuttered French window, which is sheltered by a slate-roofed verandah. The verandah and forecourt are enclosed by plain hooped railings. On the north-east side, there is an exceptionally large multipane staircase window with intersecting glazing bars, along with a smaller attic dormer above in the Regency Gothic style, featuring small pane glazing and intersecting tracery under pointed arch heads. A basement door is set in a similar pointed arched opening.

The house retains many original features and fittings, although some fireplaces have been lost. The principal rooms have six-panel doors, while the service rooms are boarded. There is re-used panelling in the attics and basement, believed to have come from the old church in Clyro.
