Description
Nowton Lodge, also known as Nowton Cottage, is a 17th-century house that features two storeys and attics, following a basic three-cell plan. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with pargetting that includes raised panels of old roughcast. The roof is tiled and was replaced in the 20th century.
Inside, there is an internal chimney stack that has been enlarged and features a high saw-tooth shaft on a square base. The ground floor has two tripartite small-paned sash windows, each with four-panelled external shutters, along with a central canted bay that has similar sash windows. On the upper storey, there are three-light windows with old square-leaded casements and pintle hinges, as well as one flat-headed dormer.
The entrance features an off-centre six-panelled door with raised fielded panels and a moulded architrave. Above the door, there is a flat pediment supported by brackets, which has been extended to create the roof of an open porch with lattice-work sides. The north gable displays an overhanging tie-beam with ovolo-moulding. At the rear, two one-and-a-half storey wings project from the main structure.
