Description
Nos 4, 5, and 6 The Village is a two-storey building constructed of painted rubble stone with a slate roof. It features a twin-gabled wing and a porch that project to the left when facing the roadside, along with a wide eaves dormer. All these elements are adorned with 19th-century decorative bargeboards. The building has a central brick ridge stack and a rubble and brick stack at the end of the wing. The 19th-century window openings are set under timber lintels, and all windows have been replaced with three-light casements. There are roof lights at the front and rear. Above the porch entry, there is a dressed stone featuring trefoil-headed panel decoration. The porch is stone flagged and includes a stone seat. The door frame for number 5 is chamfered with scroll stops and has a carved head in the style of the 17th century.
The rear elevations have been modified with flat-roofed extensions. Inside, there are notable medieval and sub-medieval features, including the partial survival of four substantial smoke-blackened cruck trusses with halved and notched collars and ties. A blocked mullion window is located at the south-west end, along with a post and panel screen, and exposed chamfered and stopped ceiling beams and joists. There is a large inserted fireplace with orthostatic jambs and a massive timber lintel, which is partially blocked by a later bread oven; the ends of the ceiling beams rest on corbels that have been hewn from the lintel beam.
