Description

21 The Village comprises two properties, numbers 20 and 21, which date back to the 17th century with later alterations. Number 20 is a one-and-a-half-storey building, rendered externally and covered by a slate roof, with a tall rubble lateral stack at the rear. A single-storey range at the south end, originally a forge, has been converted for domestic use and features a boarded door and a 16-pane sash window. Number 21 is a two-storey building with twin gables facing the roadside, constructed from rubble stone with slate roofs. It has a large rubble ridge stack and a rubble stack projecting at first-floor level on corbels. The building has a 19th-century panelled door and various 19th and 20th-century casement windows beneath timber lintels. A modern extension has been added to the rear.

Inside, a significant portion of the original cruck timber frame survives. Four massive, smoke-blackened cruck trusses with halved and notched collars and ties are present. A large rubble stack has been inserted into the former hall, where fireplace openings have been blocked. In a room to the left of the stack in number 20, a cross pattern arrangement of exposed beams with chamfer and straight-cut stops is visible, supported by a largely cut-away timber partition wall, which retains a partly visible chamfered head rail with mortices and peg holes. Number 21 is said to contain another early timber partition wall, now boxed in, between two ground floor rooms. The room adjacent to the central stack in number 21 has good quality exposed beams with ogee mouldings.
