Description

The Church of Saint Michael and All Angels is a Grade II* listed building featuring a nave, north aisle, chancel, west tower, south porch, and a lean-to vestry on the north side of the chancel. It is constructed of rubble with freestone dressings and has slate roofs. The unbuttressed tower has a plinth and a slight batter, topped with a battlemented stage that includes a clock. A small ogee-headed light is located at the base on the west side. The nave and aisle are adorned with 2-light cusped windows, while the west end of the aisle features a flamboyant traceried window.

The churchyard contains numerous chest tombs and headstones, as well as the village war memorial. On the east side, there is a lychgate.

Inside, the church has simply detailed plastered walls. The tall pointed chancel arch is surrounded by a painted inscription. The arcade of four bays in the north aisle is supported by octagonal piers with richly moulded capitals. The roof features a brattished wall plate and exposed slender common rafters with two collars and diagonal braces. There is an ogee-headed door leading to the west tower. In the chancel, the window embrasure contains an early piscina with an ogee panelled back made from two large stone blocks, and the floor is tiled. The nave retains numbered low box pews with doors dating from 1853. Other 19th-century fittings include an altar back, a panelled pulpit accessed by stone steps, and an octagonal font with Decorated ornament. The church has five bells that were recast in 1887. Stained glass is present in the chancel and in a window in the west wall, which was inserted in 1889 to block the former singing gallery. There are wall monuments dedicated to the Venables and Beaven families, as well as one to Reverend Francis Kilvert in the north aisle.
