Description
Number 20 The Village is a one-and-a-half storey building that is rendered and features a slate roof with a tall rubble lateral stack at the rear. At the south end, there is a single storey range that was originally a forge but has been converted into domestic accommodation, complete with a boarded door and a 16-pane sash window.
Number 21 is a two storey structure with twin gables facing the road. It is built from rubble stone and has slate roofs, a large rubble ridge stack, and a rubble stack at the end that projects at first floor level on corbels. The building features a 19th century panelled door and various 19th and 20th century casements under timber lintels. There is a modern extension at the rear.
Inside, there are four substantial smoke-blackened cruck trusses with halved and notched collars and ties that have survived well. A large rubble stack has been inserted into the former hall, with the fireplace openings now blocked. To the left of the stack in number 20, there is a room that has a cross pattern arrangement of exposed beams with chamfer and straight-cut stops, supported by a timber partition wall that has been largely cut away, although the chamfered head rail with mortices and peg holes is partly visible. Number 21 is reported to have another early timber partition wall, which is now boxed in, between two ground floor rooms. The room in number 21 next to the central stack features good quality large exposed beams with ogee mouldings.
