Description

Pumphouse Cottage comprises two attached farmhouses, likely dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with later alterations. The walls are rendered cob, and the roofs are covered with corrugated asbestos and concrete tiles arranged over three levels. There are outshuts at the rear, along with two rear lateral stacks featuring brick shafts and two brick end stacks.

Number 1, situated on the right-hand side, follows a two-room plan with a hall on the right. A rear stair projection was probably added during the 17th century when fireplaces and floors were inserted. Number 2 (now subdivided) features a hall located on the left.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a 1:3 window range. 20th-century windows have been placed in the original openings; the first-floor windows of Number 1 break the eaves. A gabled porch is situated to the left of centre of Number 1, while Number 2 has a lean-to porch on the left.

The interior of Number 1 retains an original oak jointed-cruck roof structure, along with deep, chamfered oak crossbeams with diagonal stops. Number 2 contains a large 17th-century hall fireplace, displaying a later oven positioned behind the right-hand jamb, and an oak axial beam, also of the 17th century, which is chamfered and stopped.
