Description

Dairy Cottage is a farmhouse dating back to the 16th century. It is located in Tiverton. The walls are of rendered cob, and the roof is steeply pitched and covered in corrugated asbestos, with a hipped section on the left side. A large rendered stack sits on the front left, and a brick end stack is on the right. The original layout comprised three rooms, with a central hall and a parlour to the right. The floors were likely inserted in the early 17th century, as the hall was originally open.

The exterior is two storeys high with a three-window front. The windows are modern replacements, although a former 4-light wood-mullion casement is noted on earlier records. A C20 lean-to has been built to the left of the lateral stack, and a doorway has been cut into the right-hand side of the hall window.

Inside, the house retains its original roof structure with four joined cruck timbers. Original muntin and plank screens are found on either side of the hall. The hall and parlour contain 17th-century oak crossbeams, all with original joists, and the hall features a large 17th-century fireplace with a later oven.

Like many Devon farmhouses, the exterior is somewhat plain, but the cottage preserves interesting original internal features.
