Description

Prowses Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 16th century. It is constructed of rendered cob with a stone rubble plinth and features a water reed thatched roof, with stone end stacks, including an external stack on the left side. The building has a two-room plan and possibly a lean-to extension on the right, along with a former cider loft at the rear left, which was rebuilt in 1993-1994 as a domestic wing.

The exterior stands two storeys tall, plus the lean-to on the right, and has a three-window range with a doorway that is approximately central to the two-storey section. It features an old planked door and casement windows that were added in 1993-1994.

Inside, the farmhouse retains original smoke-blackened purlins and some rafters above what is likely an 18th-century roof structure. The room on the left includes a large partly-blocked 17th-century fireplace and a broad-chamfered oak crossbeam. The room to the right of the entrance hall features a hollow-chamfered oak crossbeam and what appears to be a re-used head of a 16th-century former muntin and plank screen as the end beam on the right. It also has a 17th-century fireplace with a later oven and a re-used chamfered oak beam, which has blocked joist sockets, serving as a replacement lintel.

While Prowses Farmhouse has the outward appearance of an 18th-century house, closer inspection reveals evidence of much older construction typical of many Devon houses.
