Description

Rowridge Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with extensions made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of cob with a stone plinth and is plastered. The main range has hipped slate roofs with red ridge tiles, while the rear wing has a corrugated asbestos roof. The main range features two lower cross wings and is connected to the older part of the house, which now serves as a rear wing and was originally designed with a three-room, cross-passage plan.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front facade with a window arrangement of 1:3:1. Each projecting cross wing has one bay. The first-floor windows are 12-pane hornless sashes, and the ground floor windows of the cross wings also feature 12-pane hornless sashes. Flanking the central porch, which is gabled and supported by shaped posts, are tripartite hornless sash windows with a configuration of 4:12:4 panes. The porch has a panelled door beneath a semi-circular barred fanlight, with panelled reveals and a plain soffit.

On the left-hand side elevation, there is one 12-pane hornless sash window on the first floor, while the right-hand side elevation of the main range has a horned sash window. The wing features an external stair turret beneath a catslide roof and includes one three-light chamfered window, with the remainder of the windows being 19th and 20th-century two and three-light casements.

At the rear, the main range has a stair turret with a round-headed hornless sash window, and a panelled door with a two-light window above, featuring a chamfered surround and a mullion. The remaining windows at the rear are primarily 19th and 20th-century wooden and metal-framed casement windows.

Inside, the farmhouse has plain carpentry, mostly from the 19th century, including the roofs of both the main range and the rear wing.
