Description

39, 41, and 43 Tidcombe Lane is a terrace of three houses built around 1838 by a Mr. Carpenter for his three daughters. The houses have stuccoed and rendered walls with asbestos slate roofs that feature projecting eaves. The central house has original panelled brick axial stacks, while the other two have later brick stacks. Nos. 41 and 43 retain their original roof dormers.

The layout consists of three similar houses, each with two front rooms on either side of a central entrance hall that leads to a stair hall. At the rear, there is a two-storey porch wing and a single-storey service range that was originally part of a carriageway, now subdivided into three cobbled courtyards. The plan of No. 39 was not inspected.

The exterior is two storeys high, with each house displaying a symmetrical three-window front and a central doorway. They originally featured 12-pane hornless sash windows, except for the ground floor of No. 39. Nos. 41 and 43 have original spoked fanlights and No. 43 has an original four-panel door. There is also an original slate-roofed open verandah with rooflights over the openings at Nos. 41 and 43, along with some vertical glazing detail to the right of No. 43. The rear of the houses retains most of its original windows.

Inside, Nos. 41 and 43 preserve many original features, including panelled doors and open-well staircases with open strings. There are also some original and older chimneypieces with cast-iron grates.
