Description
The Canal Basin Lime Kilns are a series of 14 limekilns, some of which are blocked, built into the north-facing retaining wall of the canal basin. They were constructed between 1810 and 1814 for the Great Western Canal. The kilns feature limestone rubble retaining walls, with some ashlar on the far left, and round kiln arches made of brick. The exterior includes narrow stairs leading from the canal towpath down to a lower level, and at the far right, there is a large arch that contains a ramp leading up to another staircase. One of the kilns is positioned forward and is visible to the public, while the others only have their working chambers visible, except where they are blocked. These kilns are depicted on the Great Western Canal map from 1842 and were built as the first stage of the project to transport limestone from Burlescombe to Tiverton.
