Description
Rose Cottage is an 18th-century building that underwent some changes in the 19th century, particularly in its windows. It has a T-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall. The exterior is made of painted rubble stone and features a platt band. The roof is covered with artificial tiles and has a small dormer at the eaves. A large projecting rubble chimney is located at the right end, accompanied by lean-to additions for a pantry and a bread oven.
The front entrance has a central six-panel door, which is sheltered by a pitched roof canopy supported by plain brackets. The ground floor includes windows with twelve and nine-pane sashes, while the first floor features horned nine-pane sashes. At the rear, there is one original window with a bead-moulded mullion and transom.
Attached to the east end of the cottage is a one-and-a-half storey shop-store building, constructed from rubble and slate, which has a 19th-century shop front that includes tall mullion lights and cornice console brackets.
Inside, there are several period features that have survived, such as scroll-stopped beams, a boarded door with strap hinges, an open fireplace with a timber lintel, and a brick-lined bread oven. Additionally, there are very wide steps leading down to a cellar, located just inside the front door.
