Description
5 Hall Street is a pair of buildings likely constructed in the early 19th century, incorporating an earlier structure on the site, with the timber framed rear wings probably dating back to the 17th century. Number 5 was originally a public house known as the Cross Foxes but later transitioned into a shop. Number 6 may have initially been built as a dwelling but was being used as a shop by the late 19th century. Both buildings now function as a single shop with living accommodation above.
The exterior of both buildings features lined-out render, likely over brick, topped with slate roofs and gable end stacks. They stand three storeys tall, with Number 5 having shop windows on either side of a doorway that still has its bracketed hood. The building has 16-pane sash windows, with 12-pane windows on the second storey and additional central windows of a similar style. Number 6 has a three-window arrangement on the first floor but lacks a central window on the second storey, featuring 12-pane sashes throughout. The late 19th-century shop front includes a doorway to the right and a window divided into three panes, all set within a moulded architrave and topped with a continuous fascia. The two parallel rear wings still show parts of the original box-frame construction.
These simply detailed urban buildings from the early 19th century are of additional interest as they illustrate the re-fronting of earlier structures.
