Description
6, 7, and 8 Union Street in Welshpool are notable buildings from the early 19th century. Nos 7 and 8 are a pair of houses, with a datestone on the rear wing of No 7 dated 1829, while No 6 may be an earlier structure that is currently a disused single-celled shop.
Nos 7 and 8 are constructed of brick and topped with a slate roof. They feature an axial stack and a side gable stack towards the rear on the left. The buildings rise three storeys and are symmetrically designed with outer entrances, each consisting of a single window range. The entrances have 4-panelled doors set within shallow wooden porches that have elliptical heads. Each floor is adorned with 12-pane sash windows, including a canted bay window on the ground floor of No 7, while the second storey has 6-pane sashes. All windows are finished with painted flat-arched heads.
No 6 is a single-storey building that is set back from No 7. It is timber-framed and constructed of rubble, also featuring a slate roof that extends to form a covered yard supported by turned wood posts. This building has a single doorway and a shop window that is closed by a panelled shutter.
Together, these buildings represent a simple urban vernacular style, with Nos 7 and 8 forming a cohesive pair alongside the early shop building, all of which possess considerable character.
