Description
The retaining walls, steps, gate-piers, and gates to the churchyard at the Church of St Mary were likely rebuilt around 1830 when the road level was changed. New steps leading from Church Street were added in 1877, designed by Mr Hurst, the borough surveyor, and funded by public subscription. The cast-iron gates at all entrances to the churchyard share a similar style and were probably installed at the same time as the new steps.
The retaining walls are made of roughly coursed and squared rubble, featuring a slight batter and buttresses. The steps from Church Street include ashlar gate piers with ornate cast-iron gates at their base, along with cast-iron rails. Similar gates can be found at the entrances on Red Bank and Union Street. Additionally, there is a cast-iron lamp base mounted on a pier at the Union Street gate, making this a prominent feature of the approach to the church.
