Description
The War Memorial in the churchyard at the Church of St Mary was designed in 1921 by Aston Webb and erected by public subscription in 1923. It is made of red sandstone ashlar and features a tapering rectangular shaft topped with a tabernacle that has relief carvings of local saints. This memorial is set over low quadrant walls, which display inscriptions in raised lettering on their outer face, inscribed lettering on their inner face, and slate memorial slabs attached to the inner face, apparently added to renew earlier inscriptions.
This memorial is a fine example of its type and serves as a prominent feature in the townscape and at the approach to the church.
