Description

6, 7, and 8 Union Street in Welshpool are notable buildings, with Nos 7 and 8 being a pair of early 19th century houses, as indicated by a datestone on the rear wing of No 7 dated 1829, which may have been re-sited. No 6 appears to be an earlier structure and is a single-celled shop that is currently disused.

Nos 7 and 8 are constructed of brick and topped with a slate roof. They feature an axial stack and a side gable stack towards the rear on the left. The buildings rise to three storeys and are symmetrically designed with outer entrances, each consisting of a single window range. The entrances have four-panelled doors set within shallow wooden porches that have elliptical heads. Each floor includes 12-pane sash windows, with a canted bay window on the ground floor of No 7, and 6-pane sashes on the second storey. All windows are adorned with painted flat-arched heads.

No 6 is a single-storey building that is set back from No 7. It is timber framed and constructed with rubble, also featuring a slate roof that extends forward to create a covered yard supported by turned wood posts. The shop has a single doorway and a shop window that is closed by a panelled shutter.

Together, these buildings represent a simple urban vernacular style, complemented by the early shop building, which adds considerable character to the street.
