Description
Nos. 7 and 9 Whitecross Street are a pair of double-depth plan houses, likely dating to the 18th century. They are rendered and painted, possibly over brickwork, with No. 7 indicated as having a lined-out appearance suggesting ashlar, while No. 9 has a smooth rendered finish. Both buildings have Welsh slate roofs. Each house is two storeys high, with three windows each. The outer windows are narrow, and the central windows are paired and wider. Quoins and horizontal floor bands are visible on the facades. The roofs are hipped, with a single dormer window on each side. The windows are mostly sash windows, although specific window types vary between the two houses. Doorways are positioned on the outside of the pair.
The rear elevation reveals a hipped wing projecting from the main street range of each house. The windows on the rear elevation are sash windows with large panes. A substantial red brick stack is located in the valley between the two rear wings.
No. 9 has been more extensively altered than No. 7. The ground floor features a shopfront likely dating to the early 20th century, with side pilasters, a fascia, two display windows, a recessed central door, and a separate house door on the left side. The first floor has a four-light oriel window replacing the original paired sashes, while the remaining windows are plate glass sashes. The interior was not inspected recently; however, the ground floor has undergone considerable alterations due to commercial use, and the staircase has been replaced.
