Description

Brecon House, located at Nos. 7 and 9 Whitecross Street, is a pair of two-storey houses likely dating from the 18th century. The buildings are rendered and painted, with No. 7 designed to resemble ashlar stone while No. 9 has a smooth render. They feature Welsh slate roofs and have a double depth plan, with doorways positioned on the outside of the pair. Each house has three windows: narrow ones on the outer sides and paired wider ones in the center. The design includes quoins and floor bands, and the hipped roof has one dormer for each house, featuring 2 + 2 pane casements. Most windows are sash types, though individual descriptions may vary.

The rear elevation reveals that each house has a hipped wing extending back from the main street range, with variously altered windows and a large red brick stack situated in the valley between the two rear wings. The doorway features a late 20th-century panelled door with an integral fanlight, a transom light, and a flat hood supported by shaped brackets. The windows are primarily plate glass sashes in unaltered openings, except for the top floor, which includes 3 over 6 pane sashes and one 2 over 4.

Inside, the narrow half bay to the right of the door contains an early 18th-century staircase with straight flights, a closed string, turned balusters, a square newel, a moulded handrail, and dado panelling opposite. Other period features include dado panelling, a keyed archway in the hall, a shell head cupboard with shaped shelves, 2-panel doors, and early 18th-century floorboards. The interior has undergone various alterations over time.
