Description

1 St. Mary's Street is a two-storey building with a central entrance plan, likely dating from the 18th century. The exterior is rendered and painted, probably over rubblestone, and features a Welsh slate roof. The front has five windows and a timber Doric doorcase with a pediment above a six-panel door. This door is flanked by tripartite fixed windows, which have a central section with four panes by four panes and sidelights with one pane by four panes. The upper windows are all six over six pane sashes. The roof is fairly steeply pitched, with a hip to the left and a large gable stack to the right, which may date to around 1700 and was heightened in the 19th century. The rear elevation was not seen.

To the left is a later section of the building, also rendered and painted over rubble stone with a Welsh slate roof. This part has a double depth plan with an entrance to the right and features two to three storeys. The ground floor has a public house type frontage on the left, with paired arched windows on either side of double doors and a blank fascia above. To the right, there is a six-panel door with a transom light above. The first floor includes a large tripartite sash window on the left, with six over six panes flanked by two over two panes, and a plain six over six pane sash to the right, with a three over six sash above it, both having stone cills. The roof here is of moderate pitch, and the rear elevation was not seen.

The building was entirely remodelled as a furniture shop in 1985. During the resurvey, the ground and first floors were examined, revealing only one ancient feature: a fireplace from around 1700, which has a massive chamfered stone lintel located on the ground floor's right gable.
