Description
The Merchant House is a two-storey, two-window building, likely dating from the 18th century, constructed with painted stucco over brick and covered by a Welsh slate roof. It has a single-fronted, double-depth plan. The ground floor is distinguished by a cornice and a doorcase featuring two attached Doric columns on the right side. The entrance is via a six-panel door with narrow side lights and a transom light. A tripartite sash window with vertical glazing bars is located to the left, featuring a cill on brackets and large corbel brackets projecting from the cornice above the window head. The first floor mirrors this design with a similar window above and a round-headed window above the door, incorporating three panes over three, with a decorative key stone and impost scrolls. A bracketed eaves cornice runs along the building. The roof has a low pitch, with brick stacks positioned on both front slopes, indicating the double-depth plan. Identical stacks are visible on the rear slopes. The rear elevation is rendered and has three-light windows. The interior of the building was not inspected during the most recent survey.
