Description

The churchyard walls, railings, gatepiers, and gates located to the southeast of the Church of St. Mary are constructed from Forest of Dean sandstone ashlar. The structure features twin tall rusticated ashlar gatepiers that have wide cornices and urns, positioned between supporting rusticated wings that include arched footways. The end pilasters and cornices are adorned with panels above. Access is provided by two broad stone steps leading up to the main entrance.

The main gateway boasts exceptionally fine double wrought-iron gates and a surround that showcases ornate scrollwork on the pilasters, a bowed overthrow, cresting, and on the mid-rail, along with spear dog-bars. The side entrances are fitted with plainer gates.

To the left of the main gateway is No. 24 Church Street, where an additional short pilaster is attached. To the right, there is a long, low stone wall with copings topped by arrow-head railings. This wall curves around the south side of the churchyard, eventually turning into Monk Street (A466) and concluding at the modern telephone exchange located at the northeast corner of the churchyard. This section includes two sets of 19th-century panelled gatepiers with wide cornices and double plain ironwork gates featuring bowed brace struts.
