Description
7 and 8 Union Street are a pair of early 19th century houses, with a datestone on the rear wing of No 7 dated 1829, though No 6 may be an earlier structure and is currently a disused single-celled shop. The houses at Nos 7 and 8 are built of brick and topped with a slate roof. They feature an axial stack and a side gable stack towards the rear on the left. The buildings rise three storeys and are symmetrically designed with outer entrances, each having a single window range. The entrances consist of four-panelled doors set in shallow wooden porches with elliptical heads. Each floor has 12-pane sash windows, with a canted bay window on the ground floor of No 7, and 6-pane sashes on the second storey. All windows are adorned with painted flat-arched heads. No 6 is a single-storey building set back from No 7, constructed from timber framing and rubble, also with a slate roof, which extends forward to create a covered yard supported by turned wood posts. It has a single doorway and a shop window that is closed by a panelled shutter. Together, these buildings represent a simple urban vernacular style, complemented by the character of the early shop building.
