Description
1 Church Bank is a Grade II listed building that appears to have been constructed as a single unit, with exposed timber framing at the rear of No 1 indicating a building date from the late 16th century or early 17th century. The front of the building likely dates from the late 18th century, while the former cooper's shop is probably from the early 19th century, and the workshops are from the late 19th century.
The exterior features painted brick with a slate roof, including a single gable end stack and a rear wall stack. The building has two storeys, with No 1 designed as a two-unit plan. The central doorway consists of a six-panelled door with an overlight and a shallow canopy hood above the architrave, flanked by canted bay windows of late 19th-century style, featuring four-pane sash windows. Small two-light casement windows are located just below the eaves. No 2 is a single unit plan with a doorway on the right side and a camber-headed window next to it, which has mullioned and transomed glazing. Below the eaves, there is a three-light casement window. The rear elevation shows heavy square panelled box framing.
Adjoining No 1 to the right is the former cooper's shop, which is at a lower level and constructed of rough local rubble with brick dressings, all painted. It has a slate roof, a wide doorway on the left, and a three-light workshop window to its right, both with cambered heads. There are also two small-paned iron casement windows just below the eaves. The cooper's workshops are located in a wing at the rear of the shop, consisting of single-storey sheds made of light timber framing with plank cladding.
These buildings form a group of special interest due to their vernacular character and early origins, as well as the remarkable survival of the cooper's shop and associated workshops, which together represent a historically significant and complete group.
