Description
A cottage ornée dating from approximately 1835 to 1840, built on the site of a former toll house. The property was later acquired by the Powysland Club in 1873, intended for use as accommodation for the staff of the nearby Powysland Museum.
The cottage is a single-story, two-unit building with a central entrance emphasized by pilasters at the corners and flanking the doorway. It is constructed of painted brick with a plain tiled roof and a brick axial stack. A gabled porch shelters the entrance, featuring a chamfered 4-centred archway and a similar arch framing the 4-panelled door. The porch has pierced bargeboards topped with a pendant finial on the steep gable. Three-light windows with chamfered architraves are positioned on either side of the entrance. The roof extends outwards on both sides of the porch to create a veranda, supported by octagonal timber posts with arched braces. A short wing projects from the rear.
Original wrought iron railings with spear finials run along the street, and a matching central gate provides access.
This represents a fine example of a small cottage ornée and is of particular interest because of its association with the Powysland Museum.
