Description
Pen Maes is an early 19th-century house, depicted on the Tithe Map of 1840, with some later 19th-century remodelling and an extension. The main part of the building features lined out render that is rusticated at the ground floor, while the later rear extension and wing are constructed of brick. It has a slate roof with brick end wall stacks and stands three storeys tall with a three-window range. The facade is articulated by giant pilasters above the ground floor and includes a central entrance. A Doric portico porch is situated at the front, flanked by later 19th-century squared bay windows that have 2-pane sashes in chamfered surrounds. The upper windows are 4-pane sashes set within moulded architraves, and there is a strongly projecting moulded eaves cornice. This ambitious 19th-century townhouse is notable for its decorative facade, which is unusual for Welshpool, and it retains much of its original character.
