Description
6, 8, and 10 North Street are a group of four shops, originally likely a single house, dating to the mid-17th century and significantly altered since. The buildings are timber-framed with brick cladding; number 8 is painted, while number 10 has a pebbledash render. Number 8 has a concrete tile roof, and number 10 has Kent tiles. Initially, the range comprised a hall range (number 8) with a cross wing to the north (number 10). A rear stack is present in the former hall range, and a lateral stack is positioned at the junction of the hall range and wing.
The front of number 8 features a three-window range, with two hipped dormers containing two-light casements and a modillion eaves cornice. The first-floor windows are replacement two-light casements. Late 20th-century shop fronts have been installed. Number 10, the cross wing, has two first-floor plate-glass sash windows and one gable wall window. Remaining elements of shop fronts dating from around 1900 are visible, including half-glazed outer doors and a fascia with console brackets. At the rear, two gabled wings are present, presumably added after the original construction, to number 8.
The interior was not inspected, but it is understood that many original features survive behind later 20th-century internal finishes. The buildings are designated at Grade II for their historic interest, retaining a significant proportion of their mid-17th century fabric and character despite subsequent alterations.
