Description
This is a pair of early 19th century houses, later converted into shops with former living accommodation. Located on Southgate Street in Gloucester, the buildings were altered in the late 19th century and the mid-20th century. Number 140 has a roughcast facade, while Number 142 is faced with painted brick. Both buildings share a slate roof and a central brick chimney on the shared party wall.
The buildings are double-depth and mirror-image designs, with rear wings attached. The front elevations are three storeys high and symmetrical, featuring a stone-coped parapet. The ground floor contains late 19th century shop fronts with a continuous corniced fascia. A doorway is positioned at each end, each with a rectangular fanlight and panelled door. There are also 20th-century shop windows, three panes high. The first floor has one original sash window with 3x4 glazing bars in Number 140, and a late 19th-century sash window with a central vertical glazing bar in Number 142. The second floor windows retain their original openings, featuring sashes with 3x4 glazing bars and flat-arched heads composed of five raised-and-stepped voussoirs, with projecting stone sills. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected.
