Description

The Whitesmiths Arms is a public house located on Southgate Street in Gloucester. It dates from the 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century, and likely incorporates parts of an earlier building. The structure is built of brick, partly rendered in pebble dash, and features a slate roof with a single hipped dormer and brick stacks.

The building is a single depth end-gabled parallel block, with the stack positioned on the left gable and a rear wing extending to the left onto Albion Street. It stands two storeys high, with an attic and cellar. The symmetrical front was remodeled around 1870, featuring a central entrance doorway with a rectangular fanlight. On either side of the doorway are recesses that enclose a pair of horned sash windows. The doorway and recesses are framed by plain pilasters that support a continuous architrave with a cornice moulding.

On the first floor, there are sash windows with a single vertical glazing bar at each end, set in openings with projecting stone sills. Above the doorway, an inn sign hangs from a metal bracket. The dormer in the roof contains a pair of casements with glazing bars. The north wall of the rear wing on Albion Street displays irregular fenestration, including a ground floor 18th-century sash window with glazing bars. Inside, there are some indications of residual timber-framing. The building is prominently situated to the east of The Docks.
