Description
The Tall Ships Public House is a public house located on the south-west corner of the entrance to the Docks from Southgate Street in Gloucester. It was built in the mid to late 19th century and is designed in the Italianate style. The building is constructed from stuccoed brick with stone details and features a slate roof with two stuccoed stacks.
The exterior consists of two storeys and a cellar. The west and north fronts have offset plinths, a raised band at the first-floor level, and a moulded crowning cornice with a parapet above. The entrance doorway is framed by a moulded architrave with a carved key stone in the lintel, flanked by pilasters with moulded brackets that support a cornice. Above the doorway, panelled pilasters frame a window that is concealed by a sign.
On the front facing Southgate Street, there are three plain sash windows on the ground floor set in plain stone frames, each with projecting and raised key stones in the lintels and projecting stone sills. The first floor features three similar but slightly smaller sash windows in matching frames. On the side facing the entry to the docks, there is a central projecting chimney stack capped by a moulded cornice, with a sash window on either side on each floor, matching the windows in Southgate Street. The rear wing has irregular fenestration with three similar sash windows on each floor.
Above the canted angle on the parapet, there is a wrought-iron frame with decorative brackets and cresting. The interior has been altered on the ground floor, but the building remains an externally complete public house of this period, historically linked to its prominent location near The Docks.
