Description

The Forge is a cottage dating from the 16th to 17th century, which was altered in the 19th century when the adjacent blacksmith's forge was in operation. It is constructed of whitewashed stone and features a slate roof. The building has one storey and an attic, with three bays and a lean-to at the southwest end. The cottage includes 19th-century casement windows with timber lintels, and there are three raised and gabled dormers with casement windows on each side, with one dormer added at the northeast end of the northwest side in the later 20th century. The southeast elevation has larger windows and a lean-to conservatory, and the wall is partially battered. The entrance is now through the lean-to, leading to a door at the side of the gable stack.

Inside, there is a gable entrance at the side of the stack featuring a heavy chamfered fire beam that extends and is slightly arched over a cupboard or early stair on the left. The interior also has chamfered cross beams and a timber-framed partition built into a pair of raised crucks, which have half-dovetails for the tie and collar beams, both of which have now been removed. The vertically abutted apex is notched for a diagonally set ridge.
