Description

This building is a cottage with an attached forge, dating from the early 17th century, with later alterations in the early 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed with cob infill, now covered in stucco, and features a slate roof with brick gable stacks. The north gable has bargeboarding, and there is a tarred brick plinth. The cottage is 1½ storeys high and consists of two bays. The west wall has a single three-light casement window, and above it are two gabled dormers with two-light casements. A wooden corner post is visible at the southwest corner. The south gable end wall has an off-centre doorway with a sloping hood supported by brackets, which shelters a 20th-century part-glazed door and a two-light casement. Above to the right, there is a small casement in the attic.

Inside, the cottage has been significantly altered in the 19th and 20th centuries, but the ground floor retains a beam with the incised date of 1628. The upper floor features a chamfered beam with an early 17th-century stop. There is a 1½ storey addition to the north, constructed of brick and now rendered on an ironstone plinth. This addition has a slate roof with a gable stack and an off-centre doorway with a cambered arch and a plank door. To the left of the doorway, there is a blind opening followed by a two-light casement, both with cambered arches. Above, there are three oblong blind openings.
