Description

Whitewalls is a house built in the free vernacular revival style, likely dating to the early 20th century. It is constructed of white painted brickwork with a brown plain tile hipped and sprocketed roof. Prominent ribbed chimney stacks, with projecting heads joined by a recessed panel, are a key design feature. The eaves are boxed. The house is two storeys high, and the south-facing garden front has a western bay, a central hipped bay that projects forward, and a narrow bay at the east end. These bays are separated by a glazed sun lounge. Brick wall offsets are visible at first floor sill level around the house. The windows are iron cross windows with wedge brick lintels on the ground floor, with original casement windows above. A flat-roofed dormer is centrally located on the main roof slope. A large bow window with a timber cornice and flat lead roof projects from the western drawing room. An external brick stack features three narrow arches above ground floor windows, one above a first-floor window, and swept shoulders to two joined flues. The north front has the entrance located off-centre, opposite the main axial stack, set within a slightly recessed keyed arch. A two-panelled door is set in a moulded frame with a pulvinating frieze and a small triangular pediment. Close-spaced paned metal windows on both floors emphasize the entrance. The house was not accessible for inspection in January 1998.
