Description
The War Memorial is a simple tapered square obelisk made of Portland Stone, set on a round-nosed low step with a curved back riser. The top of the obelisk features gabled angles at 45 degrees. On the south face, there is a bas-relief of a hunched soldier in a great coat and helmet, holding a rifle and bayonet. Below this, there is an elegantly lettered inscription dedicated to the 'habitants & indwellers of the parish of Chirk' who died in the conflict from 1914 to 1919. The sides of the obelisk display the names of 66 men, carved in bold Roman capitals. The rear features an inscription in Welsh to 'Wyr y Waun'. Additionally, below the names, 19 men who were killed in the 1939-1945 war have been added. Surrounding the monument and beneath the inscriptions is a larger inscription that reads 'AND IN RIGHTEOUNESS HE DOTH JUDGE & MAKE WAR REV.XIX'.
