Description
The Hand Hotel is a 19th-century building constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, set on a stone plinth, with stone sill bands on the ground and first floors, topped by a hipped slate roof. The main block is three storeys high with cellars and features five bays, including a three-bay centre that is slightly forward of the single end bays. The central entrance is framed by a Tuscan portico that sits on a half-round step and supports a flat-topped entablature. The entrance has a pair of panelled doors with a five-paned overlight above. The ground and first floors are of equal height and are fitted with tripartite 12-pane sash windows, which have gauged brick lintels and are now rendered. The top floor has shorter windows of similar width, featuring 9-pane sashes. The building has stone moulded eaves and large rebuilt chimney stacks set in from the end bays. Above the portico, there is a cast iron bracket for the inn sign. An extension to the north is similar in style and consists of two and a half bays. At the rear, there is a 19th-century range that runs at right angles and has a steep pitched roof.
The interior of the building has been significantly altered.
