Description
5 Hand Terrace is a row of seven estate workers' cottages built in the 19th century. The cottages are constructed of brick, covered with a rough plaster, and have slate roofs. Each cottage is one storey high with an attic, and features a single bay. The terrace is arranged with three forward wings extending from the main block, housing cottages 1, 4, and 7. Cottages 2 and 3 are situated between the central section and the south wing, while cottages 5 and 6 are located at the north end.
A continuous open-slated verandah shelters the entrances, which are recessed and set within moulded frames. The entrances feature Gothic pointed arched boarded doors. Two-light paned windows, also with pointed heads, are present on the fronts of the cottages. The wings have canted windows with timber glazing. A single gabled dormer window extends from the roof on the first floor. The canted bays are characterised by cogged brick eaves. In the northern section, the positions of the doors and windows have been reversed compared to the southern section.
At the rear of the cottages, various later extensions have been added, and the windows have been altered. A late 19th-century recessed, part-glazed door has replaced the original entrance door at the corner of the central wing.
