Description

3 Hand Terrace is a row of seven estate worker's cottages built in the 18th century. The cottages are constructed of brick, covered with roughcast rendering, and have slate roofs. Each cottage is one storey with an attic, and originally had a single bay. The terrace is arranged with three projecting wings, housing cottages numbered 1, 4, and 7, with cottages 2 and 3 situated between the central section and the south wing, and cottages 5 and 6 to the north. The entrances are recessed and sheltered by a continuous, open-slated verandah that extends along the front of the terrace, returning partially up the wings. The doors are boarded and feature Gothic pointed arches set in heavily moulded frames. The windows are two-light, and similarly have pointed heads. The wings incorporate canted timber windows, with cogged brick eaves detailing the canted sections. A single, raised and gabled dormer window is visible on the first floor. In the northern section, the doors and windows have been reversed in their positions when compared to the southern section. Later extensions are present at the rear of all the cottages, and the windows have been altered. A small glazed panel is incorporated into the front door.
