Description
The Haddenham War Memorial, built in 1921, is made of Portland stone and stands 14 feet high. It features an obelisk atop a tall square plinth, raised on a single step. The top of the obelisk is adorned with a ball finial that is intricately carved with acanthus leaves, along with the thistle, shamrock, and rose. The base includes corner pilasters that frame the inscribed panels. On the north face of the obelisk, there is a carved laurel wreath with the inscription ‘OUR GLORIOUS DEAD’ and ‘THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE’. The plinth bears the words: ‘IN/ HONOUR/ AND/ UNDYING MEMORY/ OF/ THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE/ WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ OF/ 1914-1918/ AND/ 1939-1945’, followed by the names of the fallen along with their respective regiments.
